Mycoplasma genitalium more prevalent in women with bacterial vaginosis
Important data using ResistancePlus® MG to investigate over 1500 symptomatic vaginitis patients. Mycoplasma genitalium (Mgen) infection was more prevalent in women with bacterial vaginosis (BV) (7.0% Mgen positive) compared with non-BV vaginitis (3.6% Mgen positive). Macrolide resistance mediating mutations (MRMM) were observed in over 37% of Mgen positive samples.
The significantly higher prevalence of Mgen in women presenting with symptomatic BV extends previous findings regarding risks of acquiring sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including Mgen, in BV-positive women. This study is an important addition to the limited body of data related to both Mgen and women with BV and can serve to inform improved diagnostic and management guidelines for this important STI.
