Updated guidelines for M. genitalium recommend resistance testing
The Australian STI management guidelines have been updated and now suggest when testing for Mycoplasma genitalium that inclusion of macrolide resistance testing will guide appropriate treatment. Announced during the recent chapter meeting for Australian Sexual Health Medicine, the updated guidelines reflect the growing rate of resistance observed in M. genitalium infections towards the commonly used antibiotic azithromycin. Azithromycin is an effective front-line therapy for chlamydia and has been the preferred treatment for non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU).
